SUMELA MONASTERY · DISCOVER & EXPLORE
Restoration & conservation
Learn about Sumela’s restoration, the layers of its history and how visitors can help protect the site.
Layers built over time
Sumela’s appearance is the result of repairs, renovations and additions made across different periods. Restoration is therefore more than repairing stone: it also means documenting and protecting traces from different eras.
The visitor’s role
Staying on marked routes, respecting barriers, avoiding contact with surfaces and following current site rules are part of conservation. Historical restoration dates should not be read as a guarantee of current access.
